It seems that April is the month of race. First UCT made headlines by publishing a survey claiming students from the school think white people are the most attractive race. Now, the Wits SRC is accusing the University of racial profiling and they are demanding that an investigation into these allegations begin immediately.
Certain Wits students protested against alleged human rights violations by Israel against the Palestinian territories. The SRC alleges that during the protest, students were called “barbaric”, “hooligans” and “Muslim-agitators” by Israeli supporters.
“We as the SRC have enforced an academic and cultural boycott against the state of Israel. We believe that we cannot be seen or be found to be doing business with people that offend our values. By doing that we are being complicit in the war,” says SRC Deputy President Tokelo Nhlapo.
The SRC has demanded that management respond to their demands. Wits Vice Chancellor-Designate, Professor Adam Habib says he has not received an official notice calling for the investigation.
Somehow, I am struggling to find the racial profiling in the aforementioned allegations. Race is always a hot South African topic. Needless to say, if there is some truth to these allegations, then an investigation must follow.
