I have already expressed my elation for the Synergy Live Music Festival happening on the weekend of 29 November 2013 at Theewaterskloof dam, which is just an hour and a half outside of Cape Town. But as you read more from me, you will know that I am in love with the electronic music scene in Cape Town. In all its awesome-ness I have been lucky enough to get to know some amazing talents in and around Cape Town, one of them being Daddy Warbucks (or Dylan Haneck). Beyond being a Business Science Student at The University of Cape Town, he is also an extremely talented DJ and producer. Having played at Fiction, Sisterfella Fridays, The Assembly, Cold Turkey AND having opened for Steve Aoki, it is safe to say that Daddy Warbucks is rather good at what he does. So you will just have to excuse my inappropriate excitement about the fact that he will be playing at Synergy this year. So, in all of the emotion I decided to ask Daddy Warbucks a few questions so that you too can get to know him a little better:
When did you start making music?
A year and half ago
What made you want to start making music?
I wanted to be able to express how I felt through the sounds that I had in my head. This whole production thing started because I wanted to make tracks that I could come back to and enjoy, as well as pushing myself and what I can do.
Which song/experience made you want to become a DJ/Producer?
Not one in particular. But listening to all the amazing talent on labels like Brainfeeder I realised that there are people making really ‘out-there’ music. Hearing these tracks helped persuade me into finally attempting to make music.
What is it about the cape town electronic music scene that makes it special?
Its unique. A lot of South Africans are very enveloped with whats happening over seas. So much so that when they listen to local talent their perception is skewed and biased towards favoring international acts. What they miss is that there is a crop of hugely talent artists in South Africa already, with a sound that is unique and original.
What has been your favourite gig to play at?
I love Untamed Youth. The fiction booth is really fun for some reason. But I really dig most venues.
Where would you like to play in the future? (anywhere in the world)
At nights in the UK underground scene. People who are very into the sounds that I’m into. When I was in London recently the general sense of euphoria and involvement with the music had less to do with drugs and more to do with people genuinely being interested in a particular type of music. Where as in a lot of places I’ve been to, people go to where their friends are and don’t really interact with the music on a level past just listening to it in a club.
What are looking forward to the most at Synergy besides playing?
Sun and friends
Can we look forward to another EP or any interesting collaborations in the near future?
I’m working on tracks, but im more looking towards expanding the naasMUSIC
brand. There are some really cool releases coming up with some really amazing artists. My stuff will pop up here and there.
If you could collaborate with any of the other acts performing at Synergy who would it be and why?
Well I’ve got quite a sick connection with DJ VaVa. We nailed a b2b at RTD on the red bull truck on Thursday.
I will most certainly be front row and centre on Saturday 30 November at the Red Bull Live Stage between 13:00 and 14:00 to hear this set!
I hope that this increases your level of excitement for my favourite festival! Tickets are still available. So hurry up and go and get them!
