The third season of the Varsity Netball challenge is underway and it has already exhibited netball of highest standard. The tournament will take place over six weeks and showcases eight universities from South Africa: University of Free State (Kovsies), North West University (NWU-Pukke), University of Johannesburg (UJ), University of Pretoria (Tuks), University of Cape Town (UCT Ikeys), Stellenbosch University (Maties), Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (Madibaz) and Vaal University of Technology (VUT).
The tournament is in its fourth round and fans have been treated to thrilling games and amazing results. The result highlight in the first round was the Tuks team beating UCT Ikeys 62-18. In the secound, the highlight was UFS Kovsies beating VUT 89-24. The third round saw UFS Kovsies again showcasing their dominance when they beat UCT Ikeys 91-90. In the fourth round, Maties and UFS Kovsies both beat their opponents by 40 points with scores of 92-72 and 71-31, against UJ and NMMU respectively. The top three teams on the varsity netball log so far are Tuks with 20 points, followed by UFS Kovsies with 19 points and Maties with 13.
This week will see the tournament heading into the fourth round with fixtures looking like this: Maties vs UCT Ikeys, VUT vs NWU Pukke, Tuks vs UFS Kovsies and NMMU against UJ. All the games in the fourth round will be played at Rembrandt Hall, home to Tuks netball in Pretoria.
